AI and SEO: A New Era For SEO

It goes without saying, AI has changed a lot of people’s day-to-day processes. AI and SEO in particular have been on the receiving end of many advancements solely because of generative AI. From title tag optimization to link building, every single part of SEO has AI potential.

On the other hand, AI has created an entirely new avenue for search! Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT and even Meta’s AI have instantly become competitors to Google’s traditional search engine. Customers are using it more and more each day to help them make purchases. No doubt, your competitors are already on the hunt for ways to utilize AI with their SEO strategies. They may have begun to optimize their brand online for AI searches in LLMs. They may be utilizing generative AI tools to make SEO analysis and competitor research easier. Or they could even be using AI to speed up their content creation.

How You Can Use AI for SEO

There are so many areas within SEO that AI allows you to get a leg up. No matter if your site is brand new or you’re a veteran SEO expert, there are ways you can use generative AI to help you rank your site.

Keyword research and content topic discovery

If you are starving for new ideas for content, then give any of the free LLMs a spin. You’ll quickly find a few areas to write about. If you want to get more advanced, use data from your existing website to seed your prompts in order to discover better keyword clusters, variations on search intent, and more advanced topics you haven’t covered yet. This is one of the most practical uses of AI and SEO together.

Competitor analysis

LLMs like ChatGPT allow you to provide URLs that they can check for additional context. For SEO competitor analysis, you could include a wide range of items in your prompt in order to gain an understanding of where your competitors are getting a leg up on you in the search results.

Try adding the following items, with proper instructions, to analyze your competitors with AI:
  • Top 10 search results – Copy the URLs from the keyword you want to rank for into your prompt and ask AI to analyze their SEO in comparison to the page or pages you’re trying to rank.
  • Google Search Quality Rater Guidelines – Give AI all the context it needs to give you a better understanding on where your site falls short in the search results.
  • Competitor Keywords – If you want to rank for keywords your competitors have, add them all into a prompt. ChatGPT (or your LLM of choice) can take that information and put together a pretty solid content strategy for your site.
  • Reddit or Quora threads – These two sites are dominating search results as of late. See what AI can extract from them so you can improve existing content or create brand-new pages on your site.
  • Competitor Reviews – Add reviews from sites like Google, G2, Capterra, Yelp, or anywhere else, and have AI summarize where they fall short or have the advantage. This gives you the ability to address these issues head on in anything you mention on your own website.
  • Questions – If you are unsure about anything whatsoever, just add it to the prompt! Ask generative AI to address your question in its response. Most LLM models allow for a very large input, and you can instruct them to be very detailed.

Content writing

Remember, AI is prone to hallucinating, so the accuracy of your content can be at risk. There are case studies of AI content ranking well, and there are others that have hurt the reputation of existing websites. Be careful with this!

A happy medium for now would be to use AI to help you research a topic, write an outline, and identify important points to cover. Then add your own original content with your own expertise. This combines the efficiency of using AI and SEO while utilizing your own industry knowledge to generate a high quality piece of content.

Building backlinks

However, AI can help take the grind out of the process. Just know that whatever you do, a lot of other people are doing it as well! Using AI for backlink outreach may have quite a bad reputation already. In fact, Gmail has started cracking down on spammy outreach in recent months. So be sure whatever you do is still high quality.
